On December 29, Vital MTB awarded the Switchblade the Shreddy Award for 2016 Bike of the Year. Let’s start off with the name. The Switchblade? Are you kidding? That’s such a great bike name. Pivot made next-gen evolutions to the Switchblade’s geometry, pushing this machine into an enduro-worthy category of it’s own. Notable among these tweaks are chainstays that Enduro Mountainbike Magazine called “unashamedly short” (aka agile and playful) and the introduction of the Super Boost Plus 157 axle. Pair that with longer, slacker angles and you have a convincing all-purpose trail weapon unlike another bike in our line-up. In our 10+ year history with the AZ-based brand, we have come to associate Pivot with quiet, uncompromising quality.
Pivot is very thoughtful about the way that they build and spec bikes: it’s pretty spot on. In the case of the Switchblade 27.5+, Pivot delivers this model with a spacer under the head tube to ensure that the bottom bracket isn’t too low. (bonus: this same spacer can be used to slacken the head tube angle when running 29 inch wheels). As with other bikes in our line-up that have dual wheel capability, the choice of which tire size is heavily dependent upon rider style and terrain preferences. Based on our time on this bike, we think the Switchblade begs to be thrown down a rough trail on the 27.5+. Stable and strong, but never sluggish, we carry the Switchblade 27.5+ because this bike knows what do to with the extra rubber.
